Mexico's finest dance-rock band mingles nostalgia and modernism

  • We Say...

As fine and exasperating a dance-rock group as you'll find, Monterrey, Mexico's Kinky may have stumbled upon their optimum analog-to-digital ratio with their fifth album — even as they erase their Latin roots almost entirely and toss in a couple of English-language tracks to hook the gringos.

Their digitalia seems rooted, rather perversely, in sounds of the ‘80s and '90s. The album's two-track highlight, "Masacre Sónica" (Sonic Massacre) and "The Day I Lost the Beat," its instrumental version, are a Tijuana disco duck's delight, and not a single track wants for an inventive dance break. Nostalgia and modernism mingle on the Kraftwerkian "Fuego en la Fabrica" (Fire in the Factory) and the Gang of Four funk-rock of "Anzuelo" (Hook) and "Hasta Quemarnos" (Until We Burn Up).

If the English-language tracks are any indication, Spanish-impaired listeners aren't missing much. Molotov singer Randy Ebright guests on "Those Girls," which is about, you guessed it, those girls, while singer Gilberto Cerezo's aviation fixation rears its head in "Papel Volando" (Flying Paper) and "Avion" (Airplane). Ultimately, Barracuda sinks or swims on the big beats of tracks such as "Marcha Atras" (Reverse Gear) and the daft afropunk of "Tachi-Mari-Pedon-Cocongo" rather than its words — all of which is to say it's bite is badder than its bark.
