  • We Say...

L'artiste formerly known as Edith Giovanna Gassion still holds an exalted position in the annals of French history. Piaf transcended mere celebrity to become universally known as "The Kid Sparrow," an eternal Muse for a nation of Gallic creative types and dreamers. Certainly, she was the patroness of most 20th century chansonniers of both genders, the arc of her hard but joyous life and heartbreaking voice an inspiration from her beginnings as a Parisian street urchin in hobnailed shoes until her dignified burial at the City of Light’s famed Pere-Lachaise cemetery. Although the Piaf classic "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" — only appears in English on this compilation, along with "Hymn to Love" and the song that vies between her and legendary black American expat Josephine Baker for a definitive rendition, "La Vie En Rose," they all give firm impression of the immensity of Piaf’s pipes.
