  • We Say...

Bang a gong! Gamelan at its best
Bang a gong — or a metal tube, or many other things. Gamelan music (the term actually refers to the instruments, not the music itself) at times might just seem like randomly hitting things, but there's a very strict method behind it all. Gamelan is an ancient Indonesian musical form, sometimes slow, hypnotic and stately (Javanese gamelan) or frantically busy, like these Balinese examples. At times the complexity can be dizzying, and a couple of pieces, "Arjuna Wihawa" and "Becica Nguci" sound like they could have jumped off a prog-rock album — think later King Crimson (they were influenced by gamelan) without the Frippertronics. But this is actually true roots music from Balinese villages, where instruments are kept and played communally and arrangements worked out by ear. There's a brittle, speedy beauty to it all, with percussion of a hundred varieties at the center — and usually several different parts happening at once.
