Since the early 1980s, William Basinski has been recording long, melancholic compositions made of shifting loops sourced from radio, prepared piano and synthesizer. He began releasing these recordings commercially in 1997, beginning with the hypnotic Shortwavemusic on Carsten Nicolai's Raster-Noton imprint.
